About Our Cookie Banner
The first time you open a page on this journal, a small card appears asking about cookies. It is fair to wonder what it does on a site with no adverts and no visitor statistics. This page explains exactly that.
What the card is asking
The card asks whether you are happy for the site to remember your answer. That is genuinely all it covers. We do not run analytics, advertising, social tracking or any other tool that needs your consent, so there are no hidden categories behind the buttons and no long list of partners.
What happens when you click
Whichever button you choose, the site writes one small entry into your browser's local storage. It records your choice and nothing else: not your name, not your location, not the pages you read. The only purpose is to stop the card from popping up again on every page you visit.
- The entry stays on your own device.
- Neither we nor any outside company ever receive it.
- It does not expire on a timer; it stays until you clear it.
Is local storage the same as a cookie?
Not quite, although the two are often grouped together. A cookie is normally sent back to the website with every request. Local storage is kept by your browser and is read only by the page itself, on your device. For a choice this small, local storage is the lighter option, which is why we use it. Many people still call any such stored item a "cookie", so the card uses that familiar word.
How to change your mind
You can reset the choice whenever you like by clearing the stored data for this site in your browser. Most browsers offer this under privacy or site settings, often by clicking the small icon beside the web address. The next time you open a page, the card will appear again and you can choose afresh. Using a private or incognito window has a similar effect, because the browser forgets the entry when you close it.
What else touches your browser
When your browser requests a page, the hosting provider's servers briefly record technical details such as your IP address and the time of the request. That happens on every website, is not a cookie and is not used to follow you around. The Privacy and Personal Data page explains those logs and your rights.
If anything changes
If we ever add a feature that needs more than this single stored choice, we will update this page and the card before switching it on, and we will ask you properly. Until then, the card is as small as it looks. Any question about the card can go to us via the contact page.
